NAIROBI, Kenya – Schools across the country are releasing students for their mid-term break earlier than scheduled.
Originally set for June 26, the break has been moved up to June 24 due to planned protests against the controversial Finance Bill 2024 on June 25.
The decision to advance the break stems from concerns about student safety and potential disruptions caused by the demonstrations.
With the protests expected to be widespread, schools are taking proactive measures to ensure the well-being of their students.
The Finance Bill 2024 has sparked significant controversy and debate, leading to a nationwide call to action from various groups.
Parents received urgent notifications from school administrations, advising them to pick up their children earlier than planned.
Reactions from parents have been mixed. While some commend the schools for prioritizing safety, others are grappling with the logistical challenges posed by the sudden change.
“It’s good that the schools are thinking ahead, but this sudden change is tough to manage,” said one parent.
According to Citizen TV, the Ministry of Education has acknowledged the schools’ decisions and supports the adjustments.
This is not the first time the Ministry has had to revise the academic calendar this year. In May, mid-term dates were also shifted due to disruptions caused by heavy rains.
The protests, organized by various groups across Kenya, are a response to the Finance Bill 2024, which proposes new and increased taxes.
This bill has met with substantial opposition from multiple sectors, sparking widespread public outcry and demonstrations.
