NAIROBI, Kenya- Carrefour Kenya has kicked off its new ‘Buy Kenya, Build Kenya’ campaign, aiming to spotlight and promote locally made products.
Running through October 17, the initiative encourages shoppers to support Kenya’s manufacturing sector by purchasing domestically produced goods, both in-store and online.
This move aligns with the broader national push to bolster the economy through local production.
As part of the campaign, Carrefour, operated by Majid Al Futtaim, will prominently feature the ‘Made in Kenya’ mark on its private label products that are sourced locally.
This label is a certification given by the Kenya Export Promotion and Branding Agency (KEPROBA) to identify goods that are made in the country.
Christophe Orcet, Regional Director for East Africa at Majid Al Futtaim Retail, emphasized the importance of showcasing Kenyan craftsmanship.
“By featuring locally manufactured products, we aim to highlight the excellence of Kenyan craftsmanship and encourage customers to make purchases that support the local community,” Orcet said.
The partnership with KEPROBA not only recognizes Carrefour’s role in promoting Kenyan products but also strengthens its contribution to the government’s ‘Buy Kenya, Build Kenya’ initiative.
KEPROBA CEO Floice Mukabana praised Carrefour’s involvement, noting that the ‘Made in Kenya’ mark simplifies the process for customers to identify and support locally made products, driving demand for homegrown goods.
“This partnership complements the government’s efforts by encouraging Kenyans to purchase domestic products, helping to foster demand and growth within the local economy,” Mukabana said.
Carrefour’s collaboration with local manufacturers has already resulted in over 48 stock-keeping units (SKUs) of products, including detergents and personal care items, being produced under its private label.
This move aligns with rising consumer preferences for sustainable, locally sourced goods, further emphasizing Carrefour’s growing role in the Kenyan economy.
By focusing on Kenyan-made products, Carrefour’s initiative is a significant step toward creating a more self-sustaining economy and supporting local entrepreneurship.
