Henkel’s Announces Nairobi Plant Now Fully Powered by Renewable Energy

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya-In a significant step toward its sustainability goals, adhesive manufacturer Henkel has announced that its Nairobi plant is now fully reliant on renewable energy.

This transition marks a major milestone in the company’s sustainability journey and positions it as a leader in environmental responsibility within Kenya.

The Nairobi plant, one of Henkel’s eight manufacturing sites across the Middle East and Africa under its Adhesive Technologies division, has made a complete shift to renewable energy sources.

This move is part of Henkel’s broader sustainability agenda and aligns with the company’s goal to eliminate Scope 2 emissions, which refers to carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from electricity consumption.

Henkel’s focus on reducing its carbon footprint is a key component of its global sustainability efforts, which have gained traction in recent years.

Nancy Mwathi, Henkel’s Nairobi Plant Manager, expressed her excitement about the achievement.

“This is a tremendous accomplishment for our team and a key part of Henkel’s broader vision. What began as a project in 2021 has become a transformative reality in 2024,” Mwathi said.

She added that the plant’s shift to renewable energy is making a significant contribution to Henkel’s 2030+ Sustainability Ambition Framework and is positively impacting both local and global environmental goals.

At the core of this renewable energy shift are on-site solar installations that generate 95pc of the plant’s daily power needs on optimal days. The remaining 5pc comes from external renewable energy sources.

By relying almost entirely on renewable power, Henkel estimates that the Nairobi plant will prevent approximately 3.5 tons of CO2 emissions annually.

This is just one step in Henkel’s larger goal of drastically reducing its carbon footprint worldwide, with many of its sites taking similar strides toward renewable energy solutions.

The company’s transition to green energy is a reflection of its commitment to sustainability, showing how corporations can make meaningful impacts through innovative energy solutions.

Henkel’s progress in Nairobi is part of a larger, global strategy to integrate sustainability into every aspect of its operations.

The company’s ongoing efforts demonstrate its dedication to not only meeting its own ambitious sustainability targets but also contributing to the overall reduction of industrial carbon emissions.

Henkel hopes to inspire other companies to adopt similar practices, leading the charge toward a greener future in both Kenya and beyond.
