Kenya Launches Joint Operations Centre at Malindi Airport to Boost Border Security

Date:

MALINDI, Kenya — Kenya has unveiled a new Joint Operations Centre (JOC) at Malindi International Airport in a move aimed at strengthening aviation security and tightening coordination across border control agencies.

The facility, launched by the Border Control and Operations Coordination Committee (BCOCC) and funded by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), will serve as the central operational hub for the Border Management Committee.

It brings together multiple security agencies under one roof to enhance real-time intelligence sharing and coordinated responses to emerging threats.

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) provided dedicated space for the facility at Malindi International Airport, reinforcing its role in supporting multi-agency collaboration within Kenya’s air transport system.

According to officials, the Joint Operations Centre is designed to streamline communication between security actors, improve risk analysis, and strengthen operational response mechanisms.

The integrated system is expected to enhance Kenya’s capacity to detect and respond to terrorism threats, trafficking networks, and other cross-border crimes.

The centre also strengthens the Multi-Agency Team framework, which has become a key pillar in Kenya’s border security architecture. By co-locating agencies, the government aims to eliminate delays in information sharing and improve decision-making during security incidents.

KAA Managing Director Moses Wekesa reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to supporting national security institutions through infrastructure and coordination support. He said KAA will continue prioritising aviation security as part of its broader mandate.

“As Chair of Air Borders, KAA continues to play a central role in ensuring aviation security remains a top national priority,” Wekesa said during the launch.

The initiative comes amid growing regional concerns over transnational crime, including illicit trafficking and terrorism-related movements across porous borders.

Security agencies have increasingly relied on integrated systems to respond to evolving threats that require fast, coordinated action.

The involvement of UNODC highlights the international dimension of Kenya’s border security reforms, particularly in strengthening compliance with global aviation and counter-trafficking standards.

Malindi International Airport, located along Kenya’s coastal region, plays a strategic role in both domestic and regional air connectivity.

The establishment of the centre is expected to enhance surveillance and monitoring of air traffic within the coastal corridor, which has been identified as a sensitive security zone.
