NAIROBI, Kenya – Passengers traveling through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport have been warned to expect delays and possible flight diversions on Friday due to poor visibility disrupting normal operations at the country’s main aviation hub.
In a customer advisory issued on April 10, Kenya Airways announced that adverse weather conditions had significantly reduced visibility around the airport, forcing the airline to delay several departures and arrivals.
The national carrier said the poor visibility had also compelled air traffic controllers to divert some incoming flights to Moi International Airport as a precautionary safety measure.
“We wish to inform our customers to expect some flight delays for departures and arrivals due to low visibility affecting operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO),” the airline said in a statement.
According to the airline, flight diversions are a standard safety procedure in aviation and are implemented to ensure the safety of passengers and crew when weather conditions fall below the minimum visibility requirements for landing.
“Some of our flights have been diverted to Moi International Airport, Mombasa. Flight diversion is a necessary safety precaution to ensure the safety of all onboard and remains our highest priority.” t
Low visibility at airports is commonly caused by fog, heavy rainfall, or dense cloud cover, conditions that can make it difficult for pilots to safely land aircraft. When such situations arise, flights are either delayed until conditions improve or rerouted to alternative airports where landing is possible.
Kenya Airways noted that its operations team was closely monitoring the situation and working with aviation authorities to manage the disruptions and restore normal operations as soon as weather conditions improve.
The airline also apologised to passengers for the inconvenience caused by the delays and diversions, while thanking customers for their patience and understanding during the disruption.
Passengers travelling through JKIA have been advised to check with their airlines for the latest flight updates and allow extra time for travel as operations gradually return to normal.
