NAIROBI, Kenya — Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has announced that the party has internally registered more than 4.5 million members nationwide as it unveiled major leadership changes and intensified preparations for the 2027 General Election.
Speaking after a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Nairobi on Sunday, Gachagua said the party was experiencing rapid growth across the country, fuelled by growing public dissatisfaction with President William Ruto’s administration and renewed interest from aspirants seeking elective seats on the DCP ticket.
“On membership, we have 4,576,345 who have internally registered with the party,” Gachagua announced.
The former Deputy President said the party had also witnessed a surge in support from regions traditionally considered Kenya Kwanza strongholds, particularly the North Rift and South Rift.
“In light of the victory we have had in Emurua Dikkir, we have received overwhelming interest from both North Rift and South Rift regions from aspirants who want to run for elective positions on DCP Party,” he said.
Gachagua claimed the party’s strong performance in the recent Emurua Dikirr by-election had boosted confidence among supporters despite DCP finishing second with 10,760 votes.
As part of efforts to strengthen the party’s national structures, NEC announced a raft of leadership appointments targeting different sectors and regions of the country.
Lawyer Edgar Busiega from Kakamega County was appointed Secretary for Information and Technology, while Cheruyoit Leonard from Narok County takes over as Secretary for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries.
Abdi Noor Mohamed from Wajir County was named Chairperson of the County Coordinating Committee as Wilson Kanyago Ndung’u from Nairobi assumed the role of Chairperson of the Students’ Caucus.
In one of the most notable changes, Nyandarua Senator John Methu was proposed as Secretary General designate to work alongside current Secretary General Hezron Obaga, who now moves to the position of Party Executive Director.
Brenda Banjara from Busia County was named deputy executive director.
The NEC also tasked Senator Methu and Kandara MP Wanjiku Muhia with spearheading campaigns in the upcoming Ol Kalou by-election.
According to the party, DCP currently has 34 gubernatorial aspirants, 98 Senate aspirants, 764 parliamentary aspirants and 11,564 individuals seeking MCA tickets across the country.
However, Gachagua accused the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties of frustrating members seeking to resign from rival political parties, especially UDA, in order to join DCP.
The latest announcements underscore DCP’s growing ambition to position itself as a major political force ahead of the 2027 elections as political realignments continue to reshape Kenya’s opposition landscape.
