Former University of Cambridge professor Jason Arday has been found dead in London, just nine days after he resigned from the prestigious university amid a high-profile controversy over allegations of plagiarism and questions about aspects of his academic career.
Arday, 41, was found unresponsive at a property in Battersea, south London, on Friday, August 14, 2026. Emergency services attended the scene and pronounced him dead.
The Metropolitan Police said his death was unexpected but is not being treated as suspicious. Police have not publicly established a cause of death.
His death came shortly after Cambridge launched an independent review into his appointment and tenure following weeks of scrutiny surrounding his academic work and professional background.
Arday resigned from his position on August 5, 2026, after facing sustained public scrutiny over allegations that portions of his 2015 doctoral thesis contained plagiarised material.
He denied intentionally plagiarising his work, although reports said he acknowledged some mistakes in his earlier academic work.
The controversy expanded beyond the plagiarism allegations, with British media also questioning some claims about his professional and personal achievements.
Cambridge subsequently agreed to an independent investigation into his 2022 appointment and his tenure at the university.
Arday had served as Professor of Sociology of Education and as a fellow of Jesus College. His resignation letter described the impact of the public scrutiny on him and his family.
“The relentless accusations, speculation and public commentary have taken a profound toll on me and on those I love.”
He said he had continued working despite the pressure because of his students, colleagues and supporters but eventually reached a point where the personal cost became too great.
“It is simply the decision of someone who has reached the limits of what any person should reasonably be expected to endure.”
Arday said his resignation should not be interpreted as an admission of the allegations against him.
Arday became the youngest Black professor in Cambridge’s history when he was appointed in 2023 at the age of 37. His rise to one of Britain’s most prestigious academic institutions had attracted considerable attention because of his personal journey and academic achievements.
He became known for his work in sociology and education, particularly around race, inequality and higher education. His appointment was initially celebrated as a significant milestone for representation within British academia.
Cambridge had initially defended Arday against what it described as attempts to damage his reputation. However, as questions surrounding his credentials and academic record intensified, the university agreed to conduct an independent review.
Following his death, Arday’s family expressed shock and criticised what they described as a prolonged campaign of harassment and misinformation.
In a statement released through his publisher, Simon & Schuster, the family said the scrutiny surrounding Arday had become overwhelming. They described him as a gentle and optimistic person and asked for privacy while mourning his death.
Cambridge Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Prentice expressed her sorrow following news of Arday’s death.
“We are desperately saddened to hear this tragic news.”
Prentice extended the university’s condolences to Arday’s family and friends.
His death also came shortly after the release of his memoir, Great and Unfortunate Things, which chronicled his life and rise into academia. The book explored his childhood and the challenges he said he overcame before becoming a prominent academic.
His career had been widely presented as an example of overcoming adversity and breaking barriers within higher education.
