NCIC Probe: Gachagua Insists ‘Nyoka na Mayai Yake’ Was Figurative Language

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has defended his “Nyoka na Mayai Yake” (the snake and its eggs) remarks, saying they were a form of figurative political language rather than hate speech, after the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) listed him among leaders under investigation over alleged inflammatory statements.

In a statement on Monday, Gachagua argued that figurative language has long been a feature of political communication and should not be interpreted literally.

“Figurative language in politics is vital for public perception by using metaphors, personification and hyperbole for effective dissemination of information,” he said.

“It is important to note…”

The former Deputy President maintained that his remarks employed metaphorical expression intended to communicate a political message rather than incite hostility or violence.

His response comes after the NCIC announced it was investigating a number of political leaders over alleged hate speech and divisive rhetoric as political activity intensifies ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The commission has warned that it will take action against leaders whose remarks are deemed capable of inciting ethnic hatred or undermining national cohesion.

The phrase “Nyoka na Mayai Yake” has attracted widespread public attention in recent weeks, with critics arguing that it could be interpreted as encouraging hostility against political opponents.

Gachagua, however, insists the statement should be understood within the context of political rhetoric rather than as a literal call to action.

NCIC has intensified monitoring of political rallies, social media platforms and mainstream media, saying it is concerned by the growing use of inflammatory language as the country heads towards the 2027 elections.

The commission has urged politicians to exercise restraint and promote peaceful, issue-based campaigns.
