Gachagua, Kalonzo and more Pay Tribute to Dr Job Obwaka

NAIROBI, Kenya – Veteran consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Job Obwaka, has been remembered as a principled medical profession whose legacy will live on in an outpouring of tributes from the political divide following his death on Friday at the age of 83.

Dr Obwaka, who served as chairman of the board of directors at The Nairobi Hospital, died on Friday, May 1, 2026, at 7 pm at the same facility where he had dedicated years of service.

Obwaka was pronounced dead on arrival at the facility.

In his condolence message, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said he had received the news with deep sorrow, describing Dr Obwaka as a renowned obstetrician-gynaecologist and a man of great resolve.

Gachagua praised the late doctor for his commitment to truth and justice, adding that he stood firm even in the face of adversity.

He said Dr Obwaka would be remembered not only for his professional excellence but also for his courage and integrity during difficult moments.

“He chose conviction and truth over convenience, and in doing so, affirmed the enduring value of moral leadership and integrity we so deserve as a country,” Gachagua said.

“May the Almighty God grant his family peace and comfort, and strengthen his colleagues in the medical profession during this difficult time.”

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale praised Obwaka for his dedication to advancing medical practice in Kenya, saying it greatly strengthened standards of care and improved maternal and reproductive health services nationwide.

“We honour his distinguished service and commitment to humanity and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues and the wider medical community during this difficult time,” he stated.

In other tributes, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka also paid tribute to the medic, describing him as a respected medical leader who devoted his life to advancing healthcare and strengthening institutions.

Kalonzo said Dr Obwaka remained unwavering in his values even under immense pressure, adding that his courage in the face of intimidation defined his legacy.

“He will be remembered not only for the many lives he touched as a doctor, but also for the integrity and strength he upheld throughout his service. Kenya has lost a dedicated professional, a reformer, and a true patriot,” he said.

The leader extended his condolences on behalf of the Wiper Patriotic Front, his family, and supporters.

Former Attorney General Justin Muturi joined in mourning the medic, terming him a distinguished practitioner whose contributions to healthcare would not be forgotten.

Muturi said Dr Obwaka exemplified professionalism, courage and an unyielding commitment to principle, noting that he stood firm when many would have wavered.

“His resolve, even under immense pressure, is a powerful testament to the values he lived by,” he said.
