Gachagua Meets Sifuna-Led Linda Mwananchi Team at Wamunyoro

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua is meeting a Linda Mwananchi team led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri, following his return to Kenya from the United States.

The meeting is taking place on Tuesday, October 20, the day Gachagua returned to his home after an extended stay in the US. The former Deputy President had travelled there on August 26 for engagements with Kenyans living abroad.

Details of the discussions at Wamunyoro had not been made public by the time of publication. Neither leader had announced an agreement or outlined specific decisions arising from the meeting.

The encounter brings together two political leaders who have both featured in discussions about the opposition’s direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Gachagua leads the DCP, while Sifuna is associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement and The Equitable Party, which he is using as his political vehicle.

Political signals before the meeting

The meeting follows public remarks by Gachagua indicating he was open to working with Sifuna.

During his US tour, Gachagua said he would be willing to serve as Sifuna’s running mate if political negotiations and electoral support showed that the Nairobi senator was best placed to lead an opposition ticket.

Gachagua has also backed Sifuna’s political plans, urging him to build his party and recruit candidates ahead of the next election.

His remarks have put the possibility of cooperation between the two camps into public discussion, although no formal coalition agreement had been announced before Tuesday’s meeting.

The Linda Mwananchi leadership has identified Sifuna as its leader and presidential candidate for 2027.

The movement has said it intends to work with like-minded political groups, leaving the possibility of future alliances open.

The two leaders’ meeting is therefore taking place as opposition parties and political movements consider how they might cooperate ahead of the election.

Gachagua returns from US engagements

Gachagua’s return brought an end to a US trip that included meetings with Kenyan diaspora communities.

He had outlined stops in several cities and states, including Spokane, Portland, Kansas, Dallas and Boston.

The trip, initially described as a 50-day tour, ran longer than planned.

His arrival at Wamunyoro was low-key, with no large public reception announced.

The former Deputy President’s return was followed by the meeting with Sifuna’s delegation, placing the engagement among his first reported political activities since arriving back in the country.

Wamunyoro, Gachagua’s home in Nyeri County, has hosted a series of meetings with politicians, community leaders and delegations from different parts of Kenya.

Such engagements have formed part of his efforts to build DCP’s support and discuss political cooperation ahead of 2027.
