NAIROBI, Kenya- At least 18 people have died following mudslides and flooding triggered by heavy rains in parts of Kenya, authorities have confirmed.
The National Police Service said the fatalities were reported in Tharaka Nithi County, Elgeyo-Marakwet County and Kiambu County, where landslides have destroyed homes, displaced families and damaged infrastructure.
Police warned that the situation remains dangerous as heavy rainfall continues to pound several regions, increasing the risk of further disasters.
“Multi-agency teams are on the ground conducting search and rescue operations, evacuating residents in high-risk areas, and distributing emergency supplies,” the Service said in a statement.
Authorities say teams are also assessing vulnerable zones in a bid to prevent additional loss of life.
The ongoing rains have triggered widespread concern, particularly in landslide-prone and flood-affected areas, with residents urged to remain vigilant and move to safer ground where necessary.
Emergency response agencies have asked the public to report incidents through the national emergency lines 999 or 112, while additional reporting channels have been provided to enhance rapid response.
The police have reiterated their commitment to safeguarding lives and property, but warned that unpredictable weather patterns mean communities must remain cautious.
