NAIROBI, Kenya- Former Deputy President and DCP Party leader Rigathi Gachagua has defended retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, insisting that he has a constitutional right to participate in national political discourse.
Speaking during the third day of his political tour in Kajiado County, Gachagua said recent attacks on the former Head of State were unfair and urged leaders to respect his status as a former national leader.
He argued that retirement from office does not strip Uhuru of his rights to freedom of expression and association, adding that the former president should be allowed to express his views without intimidation.
“Uhuru Kenyatta has his political rights. He is entitled to speak and associate freely like any other Kenyan,” Gachagua said.
The DCP leader is on a three-day charm offensive in Kajiado County, where he is engaging residents and strengthening his political support base among the Maa community.
Gachagua used the tour to position himself as a unifying figure within the opposition, reiterating his earlier pledge that opposition leaders will eventually agree on a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
He maintained that current individual presidential declarations within the opposition should not be interpreted as divisions, but rather as part of early-stage political mobilisation.
At the same time, Gachagua criticised what he termed politically motivated attacks on opposition-leaning leaders, warning against actions that could undermine democratic competition.
His remarks come amid heightened political activity across the opposition as leaders intensify grassroots mobilisation ahead of 2027.
The Kajiado tour continues as Gachagua seeks to consolidate support and project himself as a key player in the emerging opposition realignment.
