NAIROBI, Kenya-Police have intercepted a passenger bus ferrying ammunition and government-related items in what security officials say could have escalated into a serious security threat.
A multi-agency team manning a roadblock at Kanyonyoo along the Thika–Garissa Highway stopped the bus, registration number KCW 208A, belonging to Buscar Sacco, which was travelling from Lamu to Nairobi.
What began as a routine inspection quickly escalated into a major security discovery after officers conducted a search of the vehicle’s boot.
Inside a suspicious blue metallic box, officers recovered a significant cache of military-grade items, including 19 rounds of 7.62x51mm G3 ammunition, 116 rounds of 7.62x39mm AK-47 ammunition, and two empty AK-47 magazines.
The officers also recovered two machetes alongside government security uniform items, including a complete set of GSU ceremonial attire, two combat jackets, three jungle green trousers, and a red GSU beret.
Preliminary findings indicate that the parcel had been booked at the Mokowe booking office in Lamu County with Nairobi as its destination.
Authorities say the package had no identifiable sender details, raising further concern over its origin and intended use.
Police arrested the bus driver, Said Abdulrazak Ahmed Abadalla, and the conductor, Bernard Ochieng Odhiambo, at the scene.
The two, together with the vehicle and recovered items, were taken to Kanyonyoo Police Station, where they are being held as investigations continue.
Security agencies are now pursuing leads to establish the source of the consignment and whether it is linked to a wider criminal or security network.
Authorities say the interception underscores ongoing efforts to tighten security along major transport corridors, particularly routes considered vulnerable to illicit trafficking.
