NAIROBI, Kenya- Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has come under criticism over remarks made ahead of the planned Linda Mwananchi rally in Homa Bay, with his comments raising concerns about political intimidation and the potential for unrest.
Kaluma, a senior Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) politician, told supporters that the party would take a hard line against individuals perceived to be supporting political opponents ahead of the rally.
“From today, we are giving the command that anyone who says one term, pass with them. If you are among us and you worked for the other side, and you don’t think you can walk with us, disappear,” Kaluma said.
He further warned hotel owners and residents who accommodate people attending the political event that they could face scrutiny.
“Every hotel and home they booked, we are going to inspect. If you own a hotel in Homa Bay, you need to know who sleeps in your hotel because we will pass with that person and maybe even your hotel,” he said.
“All the fuel you guys will use has been catered for. This is an ODM zone, and we are saying Ruto two-term.”
Remarks spark concerns over intimidation
The comments have triggered concern among political observers and residents, particularly the reference to inspecting hotels and homes hosting people associated with rival political camps.
Critics have interpreted the remarks as a threat to people perceived to support political opponents, with calls for political leaders to exercise restraint ahead of the rally.
The concerns come against a backdrop of previous incidents of political violence linked to Linda Mwananchi activities.
The Homa Bay MP has previously criticised politicians associated with the Linda Mwananchi faction, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Siaya Governor James Orengo and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino. In May, Kaluma accused the trio of abandoning ODM’s political direction.
