NAIROBI, Kenya- Six suspects are in police custody as investigations intensify into the shocking discovery of a mass grave in Kericho County, with detectives racing to unravel how dozens of bodies ended up buried under questionable circumstances.
The probe, being led by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) under Director Mohamed Amin, has gained momentum, with authorities indicating that more arrests could follow as new leads emerge.
Six in custody as probe widens
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen confirmed the arrests, describing the burial as illegal and conducted outside established procedures.
Investigators say the suspects are helping piece together the chain of events, including how the bodies were transported, who authorized the burials, and whether proper legal processes were followed.
DCI boss Mohamed Amin has since vowed that all those found culpable will face the full force of the law, as detectives pursue additional suspects linked to the saga.
Mystery over number of bodies
The case has raised serious questions after authorities exhumed more bodies than initially expected from the site at Makaburini Cemetery.
While officials from Nyamira County maintain that only 13 unclaimed bodies were lawfully released for disposal, investigators discovered significantly more remains, with the total rising to over 30.
This discrepancy has fueled suspicions of foul play, with authorities now working to establish the origin of the additional bodies and whether they were illegally obtained or transported.
Allegations of collusion
Preliminary findings point to possible collusion between public officials and individuals linked to a private mortuary and cemetery.
Murkomen termed the incident “unacceptable,” noting that the burial exceeded what had been authorized by a court order and was allegedly carried out secretly at night.
Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo has distanced his administration from the extra bodies, claiming officials assigned to oversee the process may have diverted them and failed to follow proper procedures.
Autopsies deepen mystery
Postmortem examinations have revealed mixed causes of death, including natural illnesses and trauma, with some bodies showing signs of head injuries.
The findings have further complicated the investigation, as authorities try to determine whether all the deaths were natural or if some involved criminal activity.
National concern grows
The discovery of the mass grave has sparked national outrage and renewed concerns over accountability in the handling of unclaimed bodies in Kenya’s health system.
Authorities have promised a comprehensive investigation, with pressure mounting for transparency and justice for the victims.
As the probe expands, detectives are now focused on identifying the deceased, tracing the source of the bodies, and uncovering the full extent of what could become one of the country’s most disturbing scandals in recent years.
