NAIROBI, Kenya- The death toll from Sunday’s violent clashes between two rival groups in Kisumu has risen to two, as police intensified investigations and launched a manhunt for individuals suspected of mobilising and financing the violence.
In an update issued on Monday, the National Police Service (NPS) said preliminary investigations indicate the violence was orchestrated by rival groups whose confrontation left two people dead, several others injured and property destroyed.
Police said those responsible for planning and inciting the attacks are being pursued.
According to police, the clashes resulted in the burning of nine motorcycles, damage to a police vehicle and injuries to several people.
Security officers have already arrested a number of suspects, while investigations continue to identify and apprehend additional perpetrators and organisers.
The violence erupted as political leaders allied to the Linda Mwananchi movement attended a church service in Kisumu, with rival groups confronting each other before the situation escalated into chaos. Security officers were deployed to disperse the groups and restore order.
Police said they are pursuing those who financed, mobilised or otherwise facilitated the unrest, warning that all individuals found culpable will face prosecution regardless of their status.
The NPS urged political leaders and members of the public to refrain from incitement and to resolve disputes through lawful means.
The latest violence comes amid heightened political activity in parts of the country ahead of the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election on July 16, with security agencies maintaining heightened vigilance against election-related violence and public disorder.
