Linda Mwananchi Takes Campaign to Mt Kenya With First-Ever Thika Rally

Date:

THIKA, Keny- The opposition-leaning Linda Mwananchi movement is set to make its first major political foray into the Mt Kenya region on Sunday, with leaders planning rallies in Thika and Githurai as part of a broader nationwide mobilisation campaign ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Organisers have unveiled a packed itinerary that will see the delegation begin the day with a church service at AIPCA Thika Cathedral before proceeding to Kivulini Grounds for a major public rally.

The leaders will later hold a stopover rally in Githurai, where they are expected to engage residents on governance, the cost of living, constitutionalism and economic reforms.

The rally is expected to attract key figures associated with the movement, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Siaya Governor James Orengo and Suba South MP Caroli Omondi, among other opposition leaders.

The Thika gathering is being viewed as a significant political test for the movement, which has largely drawn support from regions traditionally associated with the opposition.

Mt Kenya remains one of Kenya’s most influential voting blocs and was a stronghold for President William Ruto in the 2022 election.

Speaking recently, Caroli Omondi described the Thika rally as the movement’s “gateway” into the Mt Kenya region, saying it would be followed by similar engagements in Meru, Kisii and Homa Bay as the outfit seeks to broaden its national footprint.

The Linda Mwananchi movement has in recent months held rallies in Machakos, Kitengela, Kakamega, Busia, Kisumu, Mombasa, Nakuru and Narok, positioning itself as a platform championing citizen rights, accountability and economic justice.

The Thika and Githurai rallies come amid heightened political activity across the country, with opposition formations increasingly seeking to expand their support bases and build alliances ahead of the next general election.

As the 2027 race begins to take shape, the Mt Kenya tour is expected to offer a clearer indication of the movement’s influence beyond its traditional strongholds and its ability to challenge established political players in the vote-rich region.
