NAIROBI, Kenya- Ambassador Monica Juma has formally stepped down from her role in government, bringing to a close three and a half years of service as National Security Advisor and Secretary to the National Security Council.
In a farewell message, Ambassador Juma expressed gratitude to President William Ruto for entrusting her with what she described as a “solemn responsibility” at the heart of Kenya’s national security.
She said the role allowed her to work closely with the President in addressing the country’s vulnerabilities, risks and emerging threats, while helping shape strategic responses to safeguard the nation.
“It has been an honour walking this journey in service to our motherland,” she said, extending her best wishes to President Ruto as he continues to lead the country.
Ambassador Juma now transitions to the global stage, where she is set to assume office on May 11, 2026, as an Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations.
In her new role, she will serve in a dual capacity as Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna.
Her appointment places her at the forefront of international efforts to combat transnational crime, drug trafficking and corruption, as well as oversee UN operations in Vienna, one of the organisation’s key global hubs.
Ambassador Juma expressed optimism about her new assignment, noting that she looks forward to representing Kenya on the global stage and contributing to international cooperation on critical security and governance issues.
She also called for continued support from Kenya as she takes up the high-profile diplomatic role, marking a significant milestone for the country’s presence in global leadership.
