Detectives have arrested two suspects in Kisumu as part of an ongoing crackdown targeting organised criminal gangs in the lakeside city.
The operation, described as intelligence-led and meticulously coordinated, involved officers drawn from DCI headquarters working alongside local law enforcement in Kisumu.
Authorities say the arrests mark a significant step in efforts to dismantle criminal networks that have been under increased scrutiny in recent months.
According to the DCI, the first suspect, identified as Gabriel Oyuga Nyaoke, also known as Omar, was intercepted at Guba Centre while reportedly heading towards Kisumu Town.
“Upon his arrest, he was found in possession of a small black bag containing a tear gas canister and twenty rolls of bhang, revealing his involvement in illicit activities,” the agency said in a statement.
The seizure of narcotics alongside security equipment has raised concerns among investigators about the suspect’s potential links to organised criminal activity operating within the region.
In a separate but related operation, detectives apprehended a second suspect, Collins Omondi, a resident of the Riat area.
Authorities said a search of his vehicle uncovered multiple items of concern.
“A swift search of his vehicle uncovered several identification cards, a tear gas canister, a knife, holsters, and five rounds of 7.62×39 mm special ammunition,” the DCI confirmed.
The assortment of recovered items, including ammunition and tactical accessories, is now central to ongoing investigations into possible gang affiliations and broader criminal networks.
Both suspects are currently being held in custody as investigators finalize processing procedures ahead of their expected court appearances.
The arrests come amid a broader security operation aimed at curbing the rise of organised criminal gangs in Kisumu and surrounding areas.
Law enforcement agencies have, in recent months, ramped up intelligence gathering and targeted interventions in response to growing concerns over gang-related activities.
