NAIROBI, Kenya- The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has summoned former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to appear before it on Thursday, August 27, 2026, over remarks allegedly made at several public gatherings across the country.
The commission has warned that failure to appear in person could lead to warrants of arrest being issued against Gachagua, as well as possible criminal and contempt proceedings.
Gachagua is required to appear at the NCIC offices at Britam Towers, Upper Hill, Nairobi, at 2pm to assist with ongoing investigations.
Remarks under investigation
According to the summons dated August 18, 2026, NCIC is investigating utterances allegedly made by Gachagua at different public forums, under Sections 27, 29 and 63C as read with Section 63E of the National Cohesion and Integration Act.
The commission has cited remarks allegedly made at Gusii Stadium in Kisii County on February 23, during a public rally in Luanda, Vihiga County, on June 12, and during Gachagua’s tour of Meru between July 25 and July 28.
The NCIC is particularly examining remarks concerning political opponents and leadership of the Mount Kenya region, as well as language Gachagua allegedly used during his Meru tour.
Gachagua warned to appear personally
The commission has directed the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader to appear in person to assist with its investigations.
The notice warns that should he fail to honour the summons at the specified date, time and venue, the commission may seek a warrant for his arrest and his production before it.
It also warns of possible criminal and/or contempt proceedings.
The summons was signed by NCIC Commission Secretary and Chief Executive Officer Dr Daniel Mutegi Giti and copied to NCIC Chairman Bishop Kepha N. Omae.
The development comes as Gachagua continues to play a prominent role in the opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election, following his removal from the Deputy President’s office in October 2024.
