NAKURU, Kenya- Siaya Governor James Orengo has declared himself the acting leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), intensifying a growing leadership wrangle within the party.
Speaking during the Linda Mwananchi rally in Nakuru, Orengo claimed that the current acting leader, Oburu Oginga, is unable to effectively steer the party, asserting that he would take over the role.
“We know the Secretary General of ODM is Edwin Sifuna; and because Oburu is unable, now Orengo is the acting party leader of ODM,” he told supporters.
Leadership dispute deepens
Orengo’s remarks mark a sharp escalation in internal tensions within ODM, which has in recent months experienced divisions over its direction and leadership.
Oburu Oginga was previously appointed acting party leader following the death of former leader Raila Odinga, a decision endorsed by the party’s National Executive Committee.
However, Orengo has repeatedly questioned the legitimacy of that arrangement, arguing that the party’s constitution requires a formal process through a National Delegates Convention to elect a substantive leader.
Political undercurrents
The Nakuru rally is part of a series of “Linda Mwananchi” gatherings led by a faction within ODM that has been critical of the party’s current direction, particularly perceived moves to align with President William Ruto’s administration.
Orengo told supporters the party requires renewed leadership and direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The Siaya Governor said he does not see President Ruto remaining in power until the 2027 elections, calling for political change before then.
He urged supporters to intensify pressure on the current administration, even suggesting mass action from June 2026.
Orengo also stated there can be no political cooperation with Ruto, accusing him of weakening the ODM party.
The broader Linda Mwananchi faction has criticised the government, with leaders saying Kenyans should push for accountability over unmet promises.
