NAIROBI, Kenya- President William Ruto has appointed former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi as the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK), in the latest changes affecting the leadership of state corporations.

The appointment was made through a Gazette Notice issued on Friday and takes effect immediately. Murungi will serve as the non-executive chairperson for a three-year term, unless otherwise provided by law.

Murungi, a lawyer and veteran politician, has held several senior public offices, including Governor of Meru County, Senator for Meru, Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Minister for Energy and long-serving Member of Parliament for South Imenti. He has also previously chaired the National Oil Corporation of Kenya board.

The Competition Authority of Kenya is the statutory agency mandated to promote and safeguard competition in markets while protecting consumers from unfair and misleading market practices.

The authority also reviews mergers and acquisitions and investigates anti-competitive conduct across various sectors of the economy.

Murungi’s appointment comes as the government continues to reconstitute boards of state corporations as part of ongoing governance and leadership changes across public institutions.
