NAIROBI, Kenya – Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has been removed from his position as Senate Deputy Minority Whip, with Migori Senator Eddy Oketch taking over the role.
The leadership changes were announced in the Senate by Speaker Amason Kingi on Thursday, July 16, who said he had received the relevant documentation, including the minutes of the meeting and signatures supporting the change.
“The new office holder with immediate effect is Senator Eddy Gicheru Oketch,” Kingi stated.
The reshuffle comes at a time of shifting political dynamics within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Sifuna, who also serves as the party’s Secretary-General, has recently been among the strongest voices questioning the growing cooperation between ODM and President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration.
His removal is likely to fuel further debate within the party and the broader opposition, where he has remained outspoken on governance, accountability and national political affairs.
The Senate Deputy Minority Whip works alongside the Minority Whip to coordinate the opposition’s legislative agenda, rally senators for House business and ensure adequate attendance during key debates and voting sessions.
