NAIROBI, Kenya – Former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju has openly outlined his burial wishes, stating that state officials should stay away from his funeral and that he should be buried within 48 hours of his death.
Speaking at his rural home in Ralingo Village, Asembo, Rarieda Sub-County, Tuju told his kinsmen that he has already identified two burial sites within his homestead.
“Nobody lives here forever. Raila died and withing 72 hours he was buried. I have told my people here very clearly that when it comes to that I’d like to be buried within 48 hours. No state to be involved in my funeral. I have showed them exactly two spots, the family can make the final decision” Tuju declared.
He emphasized that his final rites should remain private and free from government involvement, insisting on a simple and dignified send-off.
“I am not afraid of death, but I am afraid of humiliation. That is why I want my burial to be simple and dignified,” he added.
This comes barely days after the embattled ex-CS pleaded not guilty to charges of allegedly giving false information to a public officer during a court appearance at the Kibera Law Courts.
Tuju, who has had a long political career spanning government service and party leadership, is currently facing legal challenges, including allegations that he staged his own disappearance, leading to investigations, public concern over his whereabouts, and subsequent charges of misleading police.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has described the incident as self-orchestrated, while he has denied wrongdoing, accusing the agency of harassment and intimidation.
“I have been unfairly targeted, but I will not be intimidated. My wish is to leave this world with dignity,” Tuju said in reference to his ongoing case.
The case is now expected to proceed through the courts, with further hearings likely to determine the validity of the allegations.
