Nairobi, Kenya- The political divorce between former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) just got its final punctuation mark—and it’s not a friendly footnote.
On Monday, UDA officially responded to Gachagua’s resignation with a blunt, scorching statement dismissing his move as “futile” and “belated.”
Gachagua’s resignation letter, dated May 12 and shared via his social media platforms, appeared to be his mic-drop moment. But UDA wasn’t having it.
UDA: “We Already Moved On”
In a terse, unapologetic statement signed by UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar Hassan, the party made it clear that Gachagua’s exit wasn’t exactly breaking news.
The letter reminded the public that UDA had already stripped him of his deputy party leader title following his impeachment in October 2024.
“We moved with the stealth of national conscience to equally remove you as the Deputy Party Leader,” the letter read—emphasizing that his departure had been internally finalized long before his public goodbye.
Calling the resignation an attempt to “rewrite the facts,” the party accused Gachagua of using the moment to salvage a narrative already buried. His style of leadership, it said, was out of sync with the party’s evolving vision and values.
No Impact, No Tears
While the resignation may have made headlines, UDA insisted it carried zero administrative weight.
The party claims Gachagua was already politically sidelined within the organization months ago, and Monday’s announcement simply closed an already shut door.
“Through your resignation, the Party has now fully offloaded an individual whose recent actions and utterances do not reflect the values and aspirations of our movement,” UDA declared.
Final Words: Unity, Direction—And “Kwaheri”
Amid the parting shots, UDA reaffirmed its commitment to unity, inclusive governance, and progress. Framing Gachagua’s departure as an opportunity to realign, the party insisted it would continue forging ahead without distractions.
“Your public resignation from UDA is a welcome announcement to the citizens that UDA will always preserve the unity of the State at any cost,” the statement read.
As for Gachagua’s political future? UDA doesn’t seem too concerned. The final line of the letter, sharp and final, offered just one word: “Kwaheri.”
