NAIROBI, Kenya — Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested two suspects and recovered an illegal firearm in an intelligence-led operation along the Kisumu–Busia Highway.
In a statement, DCI said officers mounted a strategic ambush targeting a vehicle believed to be linked to criminal activity. The operation culminated in the interception of a black Toyota Prado, registration number KCB 411A, carrying two occupants.
A search of the vehicle yielded what authorities described as a “Phantom” pistol, alongside a machete concealed in a sheath and three mobile phones suspected to be linked to criminal operations.
The suspects were identified as Evans Otieno Ongere and Abel Onyango Owuor, who were immediately taken into custody.
“With their arrest, an important step has been made in the fight against crime,” DCI said, adding that the suspects and the recovered items were transferred to Maseno Police Station for processing ahead of their arraignment in court.
Authorities confirmed that the firearm, vehicle, and other items have been secured as exhibits as investigations continue.
The recovery comes amid heightened security operations targeting illegal firearms and organised crime networks across the country.
Law enforcement agencies have in recent months intensified crackdowns on weapons trafficking and violent crime, particularly along key transport corridors.
The DCI has urged members of the public to continue sharing information with security agencies, noting that intelligence-led policing remains central to ongoing efforts to curb crime.
