NAIROBI, Kenya — The National Police Service has deployed reinforcements to Tseikuru in Kitui County following a series of deadly retaliatory attacks between rival communities that have left several people dead.
In a press statement issued by the Office of the Inspector General, police said they were “deeply perturbed” by the escalating violence, which has followed a pattern of revenge killings involving members of the Kamba and Somali communities.
According to the police, the cycle of attacks dates back to March 29, 2026, when a 44-year-old Kamba herdsman was killed near Mwingi Game Reserve. The following day, a suspected retaliatory attack left four members of the Somali community dead.
The violence escalated further on April 25, when an attack in the Kwa Kamari area, Tseikuru, resulted in the deaths of seven people, all believed to be from the Kamba community.
Security Operation Intensified
Inspector General Douglas Kanja has since dispatched a high-powered security team to the region, led by Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat, who is already on the ground coordinating operations.
Police said additional reinforcements are being sent to stabilise the area as investigations into the attacks continue.
“The whole aspect of these attacks will be investigated exhaustively and to a logical conclusion,” the statement said.
Call for Calm
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and avoid further retaliation, warning that the continued cycle of violence risks worsening the security situation in the region.
“The National Police Service will take all necessary measures to combat this violence and calls for calm and restraint from both communities,” the statement added.
Community leaders have also been called upon to promote peace and reconciliation as law enforcement agencies pursue those responsible for the killings.
Public Appeal for Information
Police have appealed to members of the public to assist with information that could aid investigations, urging residents to report to the nearest police station or use toll-free lines.
The agency reiterated its commitment to restoring law and order, assuring the public that swift action is being taken to hold perpetrators accountable.
Broader Security Concerns
The renewed clashes highlight ongoing security challenges in parts of eastern Kenya, where resource-based conflicts and inter-community tensions have occasionally flared into violence.
