Nairobi Faces Five-Day Water Shutdown as Major Tunnel Works Begin April 6

NAIROBI, Kenya — Residents and institutions across large parts of Nairobi will face a five-day water supply interruption beginning Monday, April 6, after authorities announced a planned shutdown of a key transmission system to allow completion of major infrastructure works.

In a notice, Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWWSC) said the Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) will temporarily shut down the Northern Collector Tunnel 1 system to operationalise and conclude contractual works linking the Kigoro Water Treatment Plant to Gigiri and Kabete reservoirs.

“AWWDA will shut down the Northern Collector Tunnel 1 (NCT1) system in order to operationalise and satisfactorily conclude all contractual scope of works for the Kigoro WTP to Gigiri Reservoirs to Kabete Reservoirs,” the notice stated.

The interruption will start at 6:00 am on Monday, April 6, 2026, and end at 6:00 am on Saturday, April 11, 2026.

Areas expected to experience outages include parts of Westlands such as Riverside and Parklands, along with sections of Lavington, including Chalbi Drive, Convent Drive, Gitanga Road, Kunde Road, Hatheru, Mbaazi, Masanduku, Leloghi Gardens, Ole Nume Road, King’ara Road, and Riara Road.

Kileleshwa will also be affected, covering Kandara Road, Gichugu Road, Mazeras Road, Mbooni Road, Othaya Road, Kaputei, Laikipia Road, Githunguri, Tembere Road, and adjacent areas.

Supply will further be interrupted at the University of Nairobi and along Mamlaka line, Valley Road, Argwings Kodhek Road, Hurlingham, Kindaruma Road, Rose Avenue, Denis Pritt Road, and nearby Kilimani neighbourhoods.

Parts of Dagoretti and Kabiria, including Lower Gitanga Road, sections of Kawangware, Sunset Estate, Kagira Kagondo, Upper Kabiria, Waithaka, Ndwaru Road, Dagoretti Market, and surrounding areas will also face disruptions.

In the western and southern parts of the city, the outage will affect Uthiru, Mutuini, Gatina, Jamhuri Estate, Upper Hill, Kenyatta National Hospital, Kenyatta Market, and surrounding estates. Informal settlements, including Makina, Olympic, Kibera Kianda, Gatwekera, Ayany, Lindi, and Highrise Estate are also listed.

Lang’ata, Karen, and adjoining neighbourhoods will be affected, including Southlands, Madaraka, Nairobi West, Bogani East Road, Forest Edge, Magadi Road, Ndorobo, Tandara, Mutamaiyu, Swara Lodge area, and sections around the Giraffe Centre and Hardy areas.

The interruption will also extend to the Central Business District, areas along Mombasa Road, South B, South C, Mater Hospital, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, the Standard Gauge Railway, Athi River Export Processing Zone, industries along North Airport Road, and Embakasi estates.

Other affected locations include Ngara, Gigiri, Village Market, UNEP, the US Embassy, Eastleigh, Buruburu phases three and four, Gikomba, Pumwani, Majengo, and Shauri Moyo.

Additional zones expected to experience supply cuts include Mathare North, Huruma, Juja Road, Safari Park area, Kenya Breweries, Baba Dogo light industries, and the entire Industrial Area.

Acting Managing Director Martin Nang’ole urged residents to store water in advance and use available supplies sparingly during the shutdown period.

“We appeal to our customers for indulgence and urge them to use the available water sparingly as we work towards restoring the supply. Any inconvenience is highly regretted,” he said.

The Northern Collector Tunnel project is designed to boost Nairobi’s water supply by channeling additional raw water to treatment facilities, but the temporary shutdown is necessary to complete final connections and improve long-term distribution across the capital.
