NAIROBI, Kenya- Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s recent absence from national events has sparked significant curiosity across Kenya, with many questioning why he’s been notably missing from the public eye.
The situation has raised eyebrows, particularly given his previously consistent visibility alongside President William Ruto. So, what’s behind his sudden disappearance?
The Curious Case of Kindiki’s Absence
Since December 20, 2024, Deputy President Kindiki has been conspicuously absent from several high-profile events, leaving Kenyans wondering what’s going on behind the scenes.
Known for his prominent role in President Ruto’s administration, Kindiki’s absence is unusual, especially considering how active he was during the early months of his tenure.
The President has continued with his duties, making solo appearances at events throughout the festive season and into the New Year, which starkly contrasts with the usual joint appearances by the two leaders.
His absence has sparked speculation about possible tensions within the presidency, drawing comparisons to the early signs of discord between Ruto and his former deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, whose own public absence from events was a key signal in their fallout.
No Show at Key Events
Kindiki’s absence has been especially noticeable at key national events. He was notably absent from the burial of Mama Anne Nanyama, the mother of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, in Bungoma, despite his close relationship with Wetang’ula.
He was also missing from the New Year’s Eve address and dinner hosted by President Ruto at the Kisii State Lodge, as well as subsequent tours of Kisii and Kakamega counties.
The void left by Kindiki at these important occasions has raised further questions, with many wondering if the Deputy President’s absence marks the beginning of another rift within the presidency.
Kindiki Remains Active Online, But Is Everything Fine?
While Kindiki has stayed out of the public eye, he hasn’t been entirely absent from public discourse.
On January 1, 2025, he took to social media to wish Kenyans a happy New Year, reaffirming the government’s commitment to improving the economy and citizens’ lives.
In his post on X, Kindiki emphasized the importance of renewing “Project Kenya” and working towards a more cohesive nation.
In the face of growing speculation about tensions between the two leaders, allies of President Ruto, including Dennis Itumbi, have dismissed rumors of a rift, insisting that all is well within the presidency.
However, the questions linger: Where is Deputy President Kindiki? And what does his absence truly mean for the future of Kenya’s leadership?
