The impeachment follows a two-week suspension during which Okero faced allegations of undermining assembly operations, particularly those seeking to challenge Governor Amos Nyaribo’s leadership.
Tensions at the Nyamira County Assembly had been simmering for weeks, with the situation reaching a boiling point when Okero was forcibly removed from his office in a dramatic standoff.
Shortly afterward, the MCAs voted to suspend him, setting the stage for the eventual impeachment.
According to his detractors, Okero was accused of deliberately obstructing critical motions, including efforts to hold the county’s executive accountable.
Among the allegations was his purported mismanagement of the County Assembly Service Board, which he chaired, with claims that essential services had been disrupted under his leadership.
During Okero’s suspension, Ekerenyo MCA Thaddeus Nyabaro took over as acting speaker, presiding over the assembly’s affairs.
Following the vote to impeach, several MCAs expressed satisfaction, emphasizing that Okero’s removal was vital to restoring order in the assembly.
“The disruptions and leadership failings had paralyzed our operations. Now, we hope to tackle the pressing issues affecting Nyamira County,” one MCA remarked.
However, Okero’s supporters have come to his defense, accusing certain assembly members of using political machinations to oust him.
They contend that the charges against him were baseless and warned that his removal could further divide the county’s political landscape.
The impeachment underscores the escalating power struggles within the Nyamira County government, where tensions between the assembly and the executive have often spilled into public view.
Political analysts caution that such divisions could undermine the county’s ability to efficiently serve its residents.
