NAIVASHA, Kenya — Chesumei Member of Parliament Paul Biego is counting losses after his truck was torched during anti-fuel price protests in Naivasha.
In a statement issued on Monday night, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) lawmaker said the truck had delivered maize flour from Eldoret to Kanini Haraka Wholesalers before it was attacked and set ablaze.
Biego said the destroyed Actros 3340 truck was valued at more than Sh20 million.
MP condemns destruction
The legislator described the incident as devastating, saying the truck symbolised years of sacrifice and hard work.
“Imagine the sheer heartbreak of watching years of your life’s work vanish in a single moment of lawlessness,” Biego said.
“This is not just a truck. It represents years of sleepless nights, relentless sacrifice and honest hard work.”
Claims of targeted attacks
Biego further alleged that some protesters specifically targeted vehicles associated with the North Rift region during the demonstrations.
According to the MP, the attackers identified the truck as coming from Eldoret after it delivered maize flour to Naivasha.
“In a single flash of senseless violence, livelihoods have been shattered, and families left vulnerable,” he added.
The incident occurred amid widespread protests triggered by recent fuel price increases announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority.
Vehicle also torched in Githurai
Separately, another vehicle was set on fire in Githurai during the demonstrations.
Videos shared online showed a black Mazda CX-5 engulfed in flames along the Nairobi-bound lane of the Thika Super Highway.
Preliminary reports indicated that the driver allegedly attempted to force passage through the protest zone despite warnings from demonstrators.
The vehicle was later completely destroyed as thick smoke billowed across the highway.
DCI launches investigations
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has since launched investigations into the incidents.
Detectives are pursuing suspects believed to have participated in the torching of the vehicle in Githurai.
The fuel price protests disrupted transport and business activities across several towns, with police reporting arrests, injuries, and damage to public and private property.
Authorities have warned that individuals involved in violence, arson, and destruction of property will face prosecution as investigations continue.
