Third Time? Ruto Returns to Kiabonyoru Project for Yet Another Launch

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – In a scene that blended déjà vu with the theatrics of a high-stakes campaign trail, President William Ruto returned to the wind-swept hills of Kiabonyoru in Nyamira County on Monday, April 13, 2026.

For the third time since taking office, the Head of State held aloft a silver-plated trowel to lay a foundation stone for the Nyamira University College.

The President was flanked by a phalanx of Gusii political leaders and members of his cabinet.

Addressing the gathering in his signature oratorical style, President Ruto framed the institution not merely as an academic facility, but as a key economic catalyst for the Nyamira hinterland.

He announced a Sh800 million allocation for the first phase, covering tuition blocks and modern student hostels, and projected that the first cohort of 1,500 students would be admitted by September 2026.

“The construction of Nyamira University College will expand access to higher learning in the county and the wider region. To turn this vision into reality, we have committed KSh500 million to build the university and KSh300 million for student hostels,” he noted.

Yet beneath the celebratory tone lies a growing political narrative of repetition and optics.

The initial pledge was in August 2024 during an early post-election tour of Nyamira. The President first earmarked Sh500 million, launching the broader Kiabonyoru Educational Hub focused on secondary infrastructure.

A subsequent ceremony led by government officials and local MPs marked the demarcation of university boundaries in October 2025.

Monday’s visit marked the presidential laying of the foundation stone, the third major ceremonial milestone, this time under the direct supervision of the Head of State.

The repeated emphasis on Nyamira University College reflects a deliberate strategy of sustained visibility in the region.

As the presidential motorcade departed, leaving behind a newly laid stone and a trail of dust, one question lingers: will this be the final ceremony or merely another chapter in a continuing sequence ahead of an eventual ribbon-cutting?
