Speaking during a press briefing at a Nairobi hotel on Sunday, Kalonzo expressed his concerns over the state of the country, citing controversial energy deals and a perceived failure of leadership.
“We want to assure Kenyans that we won’t allow our country to be auctioned. We shall fight in Parliament, we shall fight in court, we shall fight on the streets. But we will never surrender our country,” Kalonzo declared.
Flanked by other opposition leaders, including Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa, Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni, and former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu, Kalonzo was vocal about the opposition’s commitment to holding the government accountable.
Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo, Machakos Senator Agnes Kavindu, and Machakos Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi were also present, further demonstrating the united front from opposition leaders.
Kalonzo pointed to a recent opinion poll that showed 73% of Kenyans believe the country is headed in the wrong direction.
“As the loyal opposition and the government in waiting, we want to confirm that indeed the country is on the wrong path,” Kalonzo remarked.
He further criticized a Sh95 billion energy deal signed between the government, Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KENTRACO), and Adani Group, a move that has sparked public outcry.
“Kenya is facing an unprecedented state of capture. Despite overwhelming public resistance, the government went ahead to seal this deal. The ongoing impeachment drama is just a smokescreen to divert Kenyans’ attention from these multi-billion shilling deals,” Kalonzo added, referring to the impeachment talks circulating in political circles.
The Wiper leader called on the Judiciary to remain steadfast in its role as the “shield and defender” of the Kenyan people.
He reiterated the opposition’s stance on the selection panel for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), urging the court to ensure transparency in the process.
“We believe that forming an independent commission that has the trust of the people is crucial to safeguarding our democracy,” he said, ahead of a scheduled court ruling on October 14 regarding the IEBC panel.
