Congo Launches Repatriation Flights as Xenophobic Violence Escalates in South Africa

Date:

BRAZZAVILLE, Republic of the Congo — The Republic of the Congo has launched a voluntary repatriation programme for its citizens living in South Africa following a surge in xenophobic violence, anti-immigrant protests, and looting in parts of the country.

In a statement, the Embassy of the Republic of the Congo announced that emergency repatriation flights would begin on June 22, targeting nationals who wish to return home, particularly those facing severe vulnerability.

The embassy said the operation is part of emergency consular assistance measures approved by national authorities and is intended to ensure a safe, orderly, and dignified return for affected citizens.

“The Embassy of the Republic of the Congo informs all Congolese nationals that, in accordance with the directives of the national authorities and within the framework of emergency consular assistance measures, voluntary repatriation flights are planned,” the statement said.

According to the schedule released by the embassy, flights will operate between Brazzaville and Cape Town on June 22 and June 24, while another flight between Brazzaville and Johannesburg is scheduled for June 23.

Officials said the repatriation exercise will be conducted on a first-come, first-served basis while also taking into account predefined vulnerability criteria.

“Faced with the vulnerable situation affecting many of our compatriots, this operation aims to guarantee a structured, safe, and dignified return to their homeland,” the embassy stated.

Congolese nationals seeking to benefit from the programme have been urged to promptly complete and validate their travel information through designated online registration platforms to facilitate coordination with South African authorities.

The embassy also appealed for calm and solidarity within the Congolese community in South Africa, urging citizens to comply with local laws and security directives as authorities manage the situation.

The repatriation initiative follows reports of growing anti-immigrant sentiment and sporadic unrest targeting foreign nationals in parts of South Africa.

Migrant communities from several African countries have previously borne the brunt of xenophobic attacks, which have periodically erupted over concerns related to jobs, crime, and economic hardship.

Congo joins a list of African nations that have organised evacuation or repatriation efforts for their citizens from South Africa during periods of heightened tension. Countries including Zimbabwe, Ghana, Nigeria, Malawi, and Mozambique have previously undertaken similar operations following outbreaks of xenophobic violence.

Human rights organisations and regional leaders have repeatedly condemned attacks against foreign nationals, calling for stronger protection of migrants and greater efforts to address the underlying socio-economic challenges that fuel tensions.

The latest repatriation effort underscores growing concern among African governments over the safety and welfare of their citizens living abroad, particularly during periods of civil unrest and economic uncertainty.

As preparations for the flights continue, Congolese authorities say they remain committed to supporting affected nationals and ensuring that those wishing to return home can do so safely and voluntarily.
