Protesters Storm Police Station Over Conductor’s Shocking Murder

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Dandora Phase 2 community abandoned vehicles and marched on foot to Buruburu Police Station, demanding justice after a 21-year-old matatu conductor was stabbed to death by a suspect police describe as a repeat offender recently released from prison.

Joseph Mwangi was killed approximately 100 metres from his home while carrying two packets of milk and cake for his supper.

His death sparked hours of protest that paralysed matatu operations along the route, with drivers and conductors choosing demonstration over commerce to highlight what they term systemic security collapse.

“The Local Office Has Been Unable”

Protesters walked from Dandora to Buruburu to demand accountability from police, whom they accuse of failing to contain a known criminal.

“We walked on foot from Dandora to come here to Buruburu; this man has been doing these things for a long time, and it seems the local office has been unable to do the job,” said Kabiru Kariuki, a Dandora conductor.

“So we have come here to see if work will be done because the boy died a painful death—you cannot stab someone in the heart and the neck, leave them with their money, and just walk away with a phone.”

Repeat Offender at Large

Buruburu OCPD Boniface Lomuk confirmed the suspect is a fugitive with an extensive criminal history.

“We have identified who committed this act; he is a jailbird. We are told he left jail not even a week ago—it has been three days since he left prison. That is not someone who should be staying in the community. We are looking for him,” Lomuk said.

The suspect’s recent release—approximately four days prior to the killing—raises questions about prison reintegration monitoring and intelligence sharing between correctional and policing services.

Cycle of Arrest and Release

Community leaders say the pattern of catch-and-release policing has created impunity.

“He has been arrested and released repeatedly, and we hear he just left jail last week, and now he has come to kill our people. We reported to Dandora Police Station, and they say they are investigating, but it seems he is too much for them,” said Charles Ngatia, Chairman of the Dandora Matatu Association.

The grievance reflects broader governance failures in Nairobi’s informal settlements, where residents report that repeat offenders operate with limited consequences, undermining public confidence in state protection.

Family Grief

For Mwangi’s family, the loss compounds administrative failure with personal devastation.

“I went all the way to Mama Lucy [Hospital] and confirmed that he has indeed passed away. The only thing I can ask is for justice to be served against the person who did this,” said his father, John Mwangi.

His sister, Jackline Njoki, recalled final interactions: “Even on Wednesday, I was with him; he took his voter’s card to go and laminate it. Today he was supposed to come to my place, but I was met by young men who told me my brother is gone, he is already dead, and he had just been out working to make a living.”

The protest and its catalyst highlight the fragility of security provision in urban peripheries, where communities increasingly resort to direct action when institutional accountability mechanisms fail.
