  • Suspects were earlier charged in a separate attempted robbery in Kitengela.
  • Officers identified and set to be arraigned at Makadara Law Courts.

NAIROBI, Kenya- Four police officers have been arrested in connection with a violent robbery involving Sh4.2 million in Nairobi’s Utawala area, in a case that has raised fresh concerns over rogue elements within the service.

The suspects were arrested in Embakasi on Thursday, just days after appearing in court over a separate attempted robbery incident in Kitengela.

Officers linked to Sh4.2M highway robbery

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the officers are linked to a robbery reported on March 18, 2026.

A businessman told police he had withdrawn Sh4.2 million from a bank in Utawala before being intercepted along Mombasa Road near Gateway Mall.

The attackers, dressed in police uniforms and armed with pistols, allegedly accused him of drug trafficking, handcuffed him, and forced him into their vehicle.

They later robbed him of the cash and dumped him in the Karen area before fleeing.

Investigators say the suspects were positively identified during an identification parade at Isinya Police Station.

Second arrest after Kitengela attempted robbery

The same officers had earlier been arrested over an attempted robbery in Kitengela, Kajiado County.

They were arraigned in court and released on a cash bail of Sh50,000 each, with orders to report daily to DCI offices.

In that case, police say the suspects attempted to steal a diamond necklace from a Congolese national who had been lured to the area.

The victim told officers he was attacked and handcuffed before raising alarm, prompting members of the public to intervene.

A civilian suspect linked to the incident remains at large.

Arraignment set as probe widens

The four officers are expected to appear before the Makadara Law Courts on Friday, March 27, 2026, to face robbery with violence charges.

Police spokesperson Michael Muchiri said the incident highlights the presence of rogue officers but maintained that systems are in place to deal with misconduct.

Authorities have urged the public to report any cases involving police abuse as investigations continue.
