NAKURU, Kenya — The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has linked the murder of Rev. Julius Ndumia Ngari to a notorious criminal gang previously profiled for carrying out violent robberies while disguised in security forces uniforms.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the DCI said detectives had made significant progress in investigations into the killing of the Presbyterian cleric, who was attacked on the night of May 3, 2026, at PCEA Tabuga Church in Nakuru North Sub-County.
According to investigators, sustained forensic and intelligence-led operations have firmly connected the incident to a criminal gang first identified in July 2022.
The gang is allegedly known for executing armed robberies using an L1A1 firearm while posing as members of security agencies. Authorities said the firearm linked to the group had previously been recovered by police in 2024.
Detectives further linked the same gang to a violent robbery that occurred on May 1, 2026, during which Sh600,000 was reportedly transferred from a victim’s bank account to mobile phone numbers associated with suspects under investigation.
The DCI said investigators are examining a broader pattern of violent attacks and robberies across Nakuru County and neighbouring areas, with preliminary findings suggesting the gang could be responsible for multiple incidents.
“Advanced forensic examinations, including scientific analysis aimed at placing the suspects at the crime scene, are still ongoing to build a robust case for prosecution,” the agency said.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities or number of suspects under active investigation.
The murder of Rev. Ngari shocked residents and religious leaders in Nakuru, renewing concerns over rising insecurity and violent crime targeting both civilians and institutions in parts of the Rift Valley region.
Security agencies have increasingly relied on forensic science, digital intelligence, mobile money tracking, and ballistic analysis in efforts to dismantle organized criminal networks operating across the country.
The DCI reiterated its commitment to conducting a thorough and impartial investigation to ensure all perpetrators are brought to justice.
The agency also appealed to members of the public to remain calm, avoid speculation, and continue cooperating with investigators by sharing any information that could assist the probe.
Anyone with relevant information has been urged to report to the nearest police station or contact the DCI anonymously through the #FichuaKwaDCI hotline on 0800 722 203 or via WhatsApp on 0709 570 000.
