NAIROBI, Kenya – Former Teachers Service Commission (TSC) CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia has turned down her nomination to chair the Murang’a County Public Service Board, just days after being named to the position by Governor Irungu Kang’ata.
In a letter dated June 25, 2025, Dr. Macharia informed Governor Kang’ata that she had accepted an offer from an international organization and would therefore be unable to take up the county role.
“I hereby thank you for nominating me for the Chair of the Murang’a County Public Service Board. However, I decline the post as I have received another offer from an international body, which, in my opinion, could affect my performance in the said role,” she wrote.
Dr. Macharia’s withdrawal came just a day before she was scheduled to face the County Assembly for vetting on Friday.
She also clarified that she had initially assumed the position would be part-time, only to later learn that it demanded full-time commitment.
Her nomination had been viewed as a strategic move by the Murang’a County government to tap into her extensive experience in public administration and education policy, coming barely a week before her term as TSC CEO officially ends on June 30.
Governor Kang’ata had nominated Dr. Macharia alongside Dr. Louis Mwende Musikali, Johnson Kang’ethe Kinyua, and Dr. Brian Lishenga Makamu to serve on the County Public Service Board. Oscar Kimani Gathura had been proposed as Secretary to the Board.
Dr. Macharia, who has served at the helm of TSC since 2015, remains one of Kenya’s most high-profile education administrators.
Her decision to pursue an international assignment is expected to spark speculation about her next move on the global stage.
The Murang’a County Assembly will now have to initiate a fresh nomination process to fill the board chairperson position.
