Fifa is under investigation by authorities in New York and New Jersey over allegations of “artificially inflating prices” and “misleading fans” during sales of 2026 World Cup tickets.
New Jersey attorney general Jennifer Davenport described the process as a “gauntlet of confusion, fake scarcity and impossibly high prices” and promised a “thorough investigation of Fifa’s conduct”.
DCWP commissioner Samuel Levine said officials were taking allegations of “blatantly deceptive conduct” and “artificially inflating prices” seriously.
Fans also claimed they were “misled” about seat locations, while 2026 World Cup ticket prices reportedly increased for about 90 of the 104 matches.
Davenport said: “Being honest about ticket sales is not complicated,” adding the World Cup “is not an invitation to exploit our residents and visitors.”
New York attorney general Letitia James said residents “deserve a fair shot at affordable tickets” and warned: “No-one should be manipulated into paying sky-high prices.”
Fifa has declined to comment.
