JSC Reappoints Eight to Tax Appeals Tribunal, Renews Ongoto’s Term at Retirement Benefits Tribunal

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has reappointed eight members of the Tax Appeals Tribunal and renewed the tenure of the chairperson of the Retirement Benefits Appeals Tribunal, reinforcing the leadership of two key quasi-judicial bodies that handle tax and pension-related disputes.

The reappointments were announced through Gazette Notices No. 8752 and No. 8750, signed by Chief Justice and JSC Chairperson Martha Koome on June 8, 2026.

Under Gazette Notice No. 8752, the JSC reappointed eight members of the Tax Appeals Tribunal for a further three-year term effective May 11, 2026.

The reappointed members are Spenser Sankale Ololchike, Gloria Awuor Ogaga, Erick Onyango Komolo, Timothy Bunyali Vikiru, Abdullahi Mohamed Diriye, Makau Martin Mutiso James, Eunice Njeri Ng’ang’a, and Boniface Kibiy Terer.

The appointments were made pursuant to Sections 4B and 5(1)(b) of the Tax Appeals Tribunal Act.

The Tax Appeals Tribunal plays a critical role in Kenya’s tax administration framework by hearing and determining disputes between taxpayers and the Kenya Revenue Authority before matters proceed to the High Court on appeal.

In a separate notice, the commission reappointed Charles Ongoto as Chairperson of the Retirement Benefits Appeals Tribunal for a further three-year term, effective April 21, 2026.

The reappointment was made under Article 172(1)(b)(i) and (c) of the Constitution and Section 47(2) of the Retirement Benefits Act.

The Retirement Benefits Appeals Tribunal serves as the primary forum for resolving disputes arising from decisions made by the Retirement Benefits Authority, pension schemes, and other stakeholders within Kenya’s retirement benefits sector.

The JSC has increasingly emphasised stability and institutional capacity within tribunals and other judicial bodies as part of broader efforts to enhance access to justice, improve dispute resolution mechanisms, and reduce case backlogs across the justice sector.

The renewed terms will run for three years, subject to the provisions governing the respective tribunals.
