Kenya MET Issues High Flood Risk Alert for Tana River Basin

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The Kenya Meteorological Service Authority (Kenya Met) has issued a flood alert warning of a heightened risk along the Tana River Basin over the coming days.

In its latest update, the agency indicated that conditions are likely to worsen due to ongoing and anticipated rainfall with the advisory covering up to May 4, 2026.

The agency noted that “moderate to heavy rainfall is expected across the basin over the next 7 days,” following persistent rains recorded in the past week, a pattern expected to significantly impact river levels.

At the Garissa gauge station, water levels are projected to rise sharply, “reaching up to ~6.4m by 2nd May,” surpassing the critical “flood warning threshold (>5.0m).”

The report further cautioned that levels “are expected to remain elevated before gradually declining towards early next week,” signaling sustained pressure on surrounding areas.

The warning also highlights Garissa, Hola, and Garsen, with authorities cautioning that “flooding is likely in low-lying and flood-prone areas.”

Residents living near riverbanks have been urged to stay vigilant as “transport and livelihoods may be affected.”

Issuing safety guidance, the agency advised the public to avoid crossing flooded rivers and roads and to move to higher ground if in flood-prone zones.

It also emphasized the need to follow guidance from local authorities and emergency services.
