NORWAY, Europe – King Harald V of Norway has died at the age of 89, bringing an end to a 35-year reign during which he transformed the country’s monarchy and became one of Europe’s most popular royals.
The Norwegian Royal Palace announced his death on Friday, August 28, 2026, saying the monarch died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet at 6:35 a.m.
Harald had been receiving treatment in hospital after his health deteriorated in recent weeks. He had been hospitalised since August 17 while being treated for haemolytic anaemia and a bacterial infection in his bloodstream. His condition was described as extremely serious on Thursday, prompting his family to gather at the hospital.
Harald’s 53-year-old son, Crown Prince Haakon, automatically became king following his father’s death. He takes the name King Haakon VIII, becoming Norway’s new head of state after already taking on many of his father’s official duties during Harald’s periods of ill health.
Haakon had been serving as regent while his father was hospitalised. An extraordinary Council of State was convened in Oslo following Harald’s death as the country began the formal process of transitioning to the new reign. The succession makes Haakon’s wife, Mette-Marit, the country’s queen consort.
Harald had experienced several serious health problems throughout the later years of his reign. His latest illness began with haemolytic anaemia, a condition in which red blood cells are destroyed faster than the body can replace them. He was also treated for a bacterial infection in his blood during his final hospitalisation.
The king had already spent years dealing with declining health. He underwent treatment for bladder cancer in 2003 and received a pacemaker in 2024 following health problems while travelling abroad.
Despite his health challenges, Harald repeatedly ruled out abdication. He maintained that he had made a lifelong commitment to serving as Norway’s king, a position he held until his death.
Harald became king on January 17, 1991, following the death of his father, King Olav V. He ruled Norway for more than three decades, becoming Europe’s oldest reigning monarch before his death.
During his reign, Harald helped modernise the Norwegian monarchy while maintaining its position as a largely ceremonial institution. He became particularly popular for his informal personality and his ability to connect with ordinary Norwegians.
Harald often spoke about equality, tolerance and diversity. His approach helped strengthen his personal popularity even as public debate about the future of the monarchy continued.
He married Sonja Haraldsen, a commoner, in 1968 after years of controversy surrounding their relationship. Royal tradition had expected the future monarch to marry a woman from an aristocratic or royal background. Harald nevertheless remained committed to Sonja, eventually receiving permission to marry her.
Their marriage helped establish the more modern and less formal character that would later define Harald’s reign. Queen Sonja and Harald had two children: Haakon and Princess Märtha Louise.
Harald’s influence extended beyond ceremonial duties. He became a particularly important figure during periods of national tragedy, including the 2011 terrorist attacks in Norway, when Anders Behring Breivik killed 77 people.
In an emotional address following the attacks, Harald spoke about the pain felt by families across the country and presented himself not only as king but as a fellow Norwegian sharing the nation’s grief.
He also became known for promoting inclusion. In a widely remembered 2016 speech, Harald emphasized that Norway belonged to people of different backgrounds, religions and sexual orientations. That message helped reinforce his reputation as a modern monarch willing to address contemporary social issues.
Harald was born in 1937 and grew up during one of the most turbulent periods in Norwegian history. When Nazi Germany invaded Norway during the Second World War, the royal family went into exile.
Harald spent part of his childhood in the United States while his father and grandfather continued their wartime efforts from Britain. He later returned to Norway after the war.
He became the first Norwegian-born heir to the throne in nearly six centuries. Before becoming king, Harald also developed a passion for sailing and represented Norway at three Olympic Games.
Following the announcement of Harald’s death, Norway lowered flags to half-mast as citizens gathered to pay their respects.
People began placing flowers and messages outside the Royal Palace in Oslo, with many remembering Harald as a unifying figure who had remained popular throughout his long reign.
The Norwegian Armed Forces also announced a 21-gun mourning salute from nine salute stations around the country. Military units observed a minute of silence in honour of the late monarch.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said the country was mourning while expressing gratitude for Harald’s decades of service to Norway.
International tributes also began arriving soon after the announcement.
Britain’s King Charles III, who described Harald as his “dear cousin,” praised the late monarch’s warmth and humility and expressed condolences to Queen Sonja and the Norwegian royal family. Other European royals also paid tribute.
