KURA Announces Major Road Closures in Nairobi as Bridge Construction Works Begin

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Motorists using Nairobi’s central business district and surrounding areas should prepare for traffic disruptions after the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) announced a series of partial road closures to facilitate major infrastructure works.

In a public notice issued on Monday, KURA said sections of Kenyatta Avenue, Valley Road, and Jakaya Kikwete Road will be partially closed from June 12, 2026, until February 12, 2027, to allow contractors to undertake bridge construction works.

The authority said the closures are necessary to ensure the safety of motorists, pedestrians, and construction workers while minimising disruptions during the implementation of the project.

Key Roads Affected

According to KURA, Ngong Road will also experience a temporary partial closure for one week, from June 11 to June 18, 2026.

The affected section stretches between Windy Ridge and Westwood Park Road, where contractors will install twin cross culverts as part of ongoing road improvement works.

“Ngong Road will be partially closed for one week to allow the contractor to install twin cross culverts at the section between Windy Ridge and Westwood Park Road,” KURA stated.

Meanwhile, motorists using Haile Selassie Avenue will face a longer disruption, with the road scheduled for partial closure from June 12 to October 12, 2026.

The affected stretch lies between the Social Health Authority (SHA) building and the Madison Insurance Building and forms part of ongoing efforts to improve traffic movement within Nairobi’s transport network.

Infrastructure Upgrade Programme

KURA said the closures form part of the final phase of major infrastructure projects aimed at easing congestion and enhancing urban mobility within the capital city.

The authority has been implementing several road expansion and traffic management projects across Nairobi to address increasing transport demand driven by population growth and economic activity.

As part of these improvements, Ngong Road has undergone significant upgrades, including the construction of an approximately 800-metre flyover near Junction Mall.

The elevated dual-carriageway, valued at about Sh3.58 billion, was designed to bypass the notorious traffic bottleneck at the Junction Mall roundabout and improve traffic flow along one of Nairobi’s busiest economic corridors.

Motorists Advised to Seek Alternative Routes

KURA urged road users to plan their journeys in advance and utilise alternative routes during the construction period.

“We urge motorists to use alternative routes and follow the guidance by traffic police and marshals,” the authority said.

Traffic police officers and marshals will be deployed at affected sections to direct motorists and manage traffic flow throughout the construction period.
