KWS Launches Wild Scholars Programme to Boost Student Wellbeing and Conservation Learning

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has launched a nationwide schools programme aimed at promoting conservation education, mental well-being, and outdoor learning among students through increased access to the country’s parks, reserves, and wildlife sanctuaries.

The initiative, dubbed Wild Scholars, was officially unveiled at the Nairobi Safari Walk, where KWS hosted the first cohort of 400 students from Alliance Girls High School for an immersive conservation learning experience.

According to KWS, the programme seeks to complement classroom learning by exposing students to practical conservation education while providing a healthy environment where learners can relax, reconnect with nature, and relieve academic stress.

“The future of wildlife conservation does not just sit in textbooks,” KWS said in a statement, noting that the programme is designed to nurture the next generation of conservation champions through hands-on experiences in natural settings.

The launch comes amid growing concerns about the mental health and well-being of learners, with KWS emphasizing the need for safe and constructive spaces where students can take a break from academic pressures.

“Academic terms are demanding, and the daily pressures on young minds can be heavy. Our students need constructive outlets and peaceful sanctuaries where they can clear their minds and reset,” the agency said.

Under the programme, schools from nursery to tertiary institutions will benefit from a range of incentives aimed at making educational visits to conservation areas more affordable.

Students visiting premium parks such as Amboseli and Lake Nakuru National Parks will pay a subsidized entry fee of Sh500, while those visiting urban and wilderness parks, including Nairobi National Park and Tsavo East and West National Parks, will pay Sh400.

KWS has also introduced transport relief measures, offering schools discounts of up to 40 per cent on bus entry fees, capped at Sh3,000 for large buses.

To encourage more visits, an additional 10 per cent discount on park entry fees will be available for school groups visiting between Saturday and Monday.

The agency further announced free entry for up to three teachers or facilitators accompanying each school trip to support coordination and supervision. Schools will also receive 10 complimentary entries for every 100 paying students, while children below six years will continue to enjoy free access.

The programme aligns with broader national efforts to strengthen environmental awareness and conservation stewardship among young people. Kenya’s wildlife sector remains a key contributor to tourism, environmental sustainability, and economic development, making conservation education an important component of the country’s long-term development agenda.

KWS has called on school administrators, teachers, and parents to embrace the initiative and incorporate outdoor learning experiences into educational programmes.

By opening wildlife spaces to more learners, the agency hopes to foster a generation that not only understands the value of conservation but also appreciates the role nature can play in promoting mental wellness and personal development.

The Wild Scholars programme is expected to be rolled out across KWS-managed parks, reserves, and sanctuaries nationwide, providing thousands of students with greater opportunities to learn, explore, and engage with Kenya’s rich natural heritage.
