NAIROBI, Kenya — Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced that 355 people were arrested during demonstrations held across the country to mark the second anniversary of the June 25, 2024, Gen Z protests, even as he commended Kenyans for maintaining relative peace throughout the day.

Speaking during a briefing on Thursday evening, Murkomen said the majority of the country remained calm despite heightened security operations and demonstrations in several towns.

“I want to commend all Kenyans for heeding the government’s call to maintain peace and go about their daily activities,” Murkomen said, noting that June 25 remained a normal working and school day despite the nationwide commemorations.

According to the Interior CS, a total of 355 arrests had been recorded by the time of the briefing, although he indicated that the figure could rise as investigations continue.

Nairobi County recorded the highest number of arrests at 161, followed by Kajiado with 123 and Kiambu with 36.

Other counties where arrests were reported included Murang’a (12), Bungoma (9), Meru (6), Laikipia (5), and Machakos (3).

Murkomen said those arrested would face various charges, including robbery, vandalism, obstruction of roads, and attempted theft.

The CS also reported an incident in Murang’a County where Kariti Sublocation Assistant Chief Anthony Kadungu was allegedly attacked while attempting to prevent the erection of a barricade.

According to Murkomen, the administrator sustained injuries during the confrontation but was treated at Kundoini Health Centre and later discharged in stable condition.

The Interior CS praised security officers for what he described as professionalism and effective coordination in managing the demonstrations.

“I commend our security agencies for their commitment and dedication to maintaining law and order. They acted with utmost professionalism and responded promptly to concerns by Kenyans,” he said.

The demonstrations were organised to commemorate victims of the June 25, 2024, anti-Finance Bill protests, which culminated in protesters breaching Parliament and triggering a major political crisis that reshaped national discourse on governance, accountability, and public participation.

Despite the government’s assessment that the day remained largely peaceful, several confrontations were reported in Nairobi’s Central Business District.

Videos circulating on social media showed anti-riot police firing tear gas canisters at groups of protesters in multiple locations, including around City Market, University Way and areas surrounding the University of Nairobi.

Witnesses reported that protesters attempting to advance towards key government installations were dispersed by police, leading to running battles in parts of the city centre.

Thick clouds of tear gas were seen hanging over sections of the CBD as demonstrators scattered through adjacent streets.

Heavy security deployment was also maintained around Parliament Buildings and other strategic government facilities, with police roadblocks and barricades mounted on major roads leading into the city.

Human rights organisations and civil society groups had earlier urged both demonstrators and security agencies to exercise restraint and uphold constitutional rights during the commemorative events.

The June 25 anniversary remains a significant date in Kenya’s recent political history, symbolising the emergence of Gen Z-led civic activism that mobilised thousands of young people against the 2024 Finance Bill and broader governance concerns.

As investigations continue into incidents reported during Thursday’s demonstrations, authorities say security agencies remain on alert while processing those arrested across the country.
