NYERI, Kenya — The government has stepped up support for families affected by a fatal road accident along the Nyeri–Nyahururu highway that claimed 16 lives, with authorities pledging financial and logistical assistance as mourning continues.
In a joint effort between the Nyeri County Government and the national administration, a multi-agency committee has been established to coordinate support for victims’ families, including covering post-mortem costs, coffins, hearses, and transportation of the deceased to their respective homes.
Officials confirmed that each affected family has also received Sh150,000 to assist with funeral and related expenses.
The accident, which involved a lorry and a public service vehicle (matatu), left six survivors, some of whom are still receiving medical attention.
Authorities said the intervention is aimed at easing the burden on bereaved families while ensuring dignified send-offs for the victims.
An interdenominational requiem mass for those who perished is scheduled for next week, Tuesday at the ASK Kabiru-ini grounds in Nyeri, bringing together families, leaders, and members of the public in collective mourning.
The organising committee has also arranged transport for affected families, including buses to ferry them to the venue.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki is expected to attend the requiem mass, underscoring the national significance of the tragedy.
Leaders and road safety advocates have renewed calls for stricter enforcement and sustained public awareness to curb fatalities, especially during peak travel periods.
As families prepare to lay their loved ones to rest, the tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of road accidents and the urgent need for improved safety measures on Kenya’s roads.
