WASHINGTON, U.S. — U.S. President Donald Trump has dismissed Attorney General Pam Bondi, ending a controversial tenure marked by sweeping changes at the Department of Justice and escalating political tensions.
In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump praised Bondi as a “Great American Patriot” and “loyal friend,” saying she had overseen a significant crime reduction and would transition to a new role in the private sector.
“We love Pam, and she will be transitioning to a much-needed and important new job in the private sector, to be announced at a date in the near future,” Trump said.
The US President announced that Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche would take over as acting attorney general, while Lee Zeldin, currently head of the Environmental Protection Agency and a former New York congressman, is reportedly a leading contender for the position.
Bondi’s tenure was defined by a dramatic reshaping of the Justice Department, including the removal of career officials and a shift in prosecutorial focus toward immigration-related cases.
She also played a central role in defending Trump’s expansive executive orders against mounting legal challenges.
However, her time in office drew sharp criticism from legal experts and political opponents, particularly over her compliance with Trump’s public calls to prosecute political adversaries.
Under her leadership, federal prosecutors brought charges against high-profile figures, including former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
Other notable cases included the indictment of former National Security Adviser John Bolton, while attempts to secure charges against several members of Congress reportedly failed to gain traction with a grand jury.
Bondi also faced sustained scrutiny over her handling of files linked to Jeffrey Epstein, particularly amid conflicting public statements regarding their release.
The issue became a persistent political liability for the administration, with Trump reportedly growing increasingly frustrated over delays and the broader fallout.
The Justice Department’s actions during Bondi’s tenure have raised significant constitutional and legal questions, particularly around the independence of prosecutorial authority and the potential use of state power against perceived political opponents, issues that strike at the core of the rule of law and separation of powers in the U.S. system.
While the White House framed her departure as a transition, analysts view the move as part of a broader effort by Trump to recalibrate his administration amid mounting political pressure and internal dissatisfaction.
Bondi’s exit leaves the Justice Department at a critical juncture, with her successor expected to navigate ongoing investigations, legal battles over executive authority, and heightened scrutiny over the department’s independence.
