Police Dismiss Claims of Spike in Child Kidnappings

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Police have dismissed claims of a surge in child kidnappings and missing children cases in Kenya, even as government data shows nearly 2,000 abduction incidents were recorded between January 2025 and March 2026.

National Police Service spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said increased public awareness and faster information sharing have created the perception of rising cases, rather than an actual spike in incidents.

“We don’t have a surge; it is only that we have a public that is more conscious, more aware, and then we have the spread of information, which is faster,” Nyaga said during an interview with Citizen TV on Monday.

Police data presented by Nyaga indicates that reported missing children cases declined from 1,276 in 2024 to 754 in 2025, with 139 cases recorded so far in 2026. Of the 139 cases, 41 are pending before the courts while 52 remain under active investigation.

Social Media and AI Fuel Public Anxiety

Nyaga warned that social media platforms and artificial intelligence-generated content have amplified fear and misinformation surrounding child disappearances.

“We have the intrusion of AI and fakes. Some of the clips we have seen in recent times… this is something that is recycled,” he said.

He urged Kenyans to verify information before sharing sensitive reports online, calling for “calmness and facts” in public discussions about missing children.

The remarks come amid growing national concern over child safety during commemorations of International Missing Children’s Day.

Ministry Data Paints a Broader Picture

Despite police assurances, figures from the Ministry of Gender, Culture, and Children Services reveal a wider child protection crisis.

According to data from the Child Protection Information Management System, authorities recorded 10,581 child protection cases between January 2025 and March 2026. The cases included 1,636 missing children reports, 1,952 abductions, 6,820 child abandonments, and 173 trafficking incidents.

Government agencies say 78 pc of the cases have been resolved through rescues and reunifications. However, approximately 2,328 children remain unaccounted for.

Hanna Cheptumo Wendot chaired a high-level multi-agency meeting on Monday, bringing together the National Police Service, Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Kenya National Human Rights Commission, and the Council of Governors.

The agencies agreed to operationalise the National Child Protection Command Centre, strengthen intelligence sharing, and improve coordination among institutions handling child protection cases.

“We will continue to work closely with communities, parents, civil society, faith leaders, development partners, and the media to strengthen awareness, vigilance, and collective responsibility in safeguarding our children,” Cheptumo said.

Concerns Over Gaps in Reporting Systems

Missing Child Kenya Foundation CEO Maryana Munyendo said inconsistent reporting mechanisms continue to hinder effective tracking of missing children.

The organisation has handled 1,883 missing children cases since 2016, including 406 cases in 2021 and 158 in 2025. Between January and May 2026 alone, the foundation recorded 41 cases.

Munyendo said increased public awareness has encouraged families to seek help beyond police stations and government agencies.

“We have started receiving more cases of children missing from different angles and different people who are hearing about different platforms that can assist,” she said.

LSK Calls Situation a “Constitutional Emergency”

Law Society of Kenya President Charles Kanjama described the situation as a “constitutional emergency” and called for stronger anti-trafficking laws, real-time child tracking systems, and tougher accountability measures.

Authorities have intensified awareness campaigns and urged the public to report cases immediately through Child Helpline 116, children’s offices and police stations under the “see something, say something” initiative.
