NAIROBI, Kenya– President William Ruto has pledged to slash the cost of sexed semen from Sh4,000 to Sh1,000, starting July 1 in a move expected to reshape Kenya’s dairy landscape.
Speaking at the 10th Annual Dairy Farmers Field Day 2025 in Meru County, the President positioned the subsidy as a strategic intervention to enhance milk output and breed quality on local farms.
“My plan is to ensure farmers get optimum resources from their milk produce. That is why we must ensure we get the best semen for our farmers at low prices,” Ruto said.
“This intervention will ensure that farmers can access high-quality genetics at an affordable price, which is essential for improved productivity and income,” he added.
By cutting the cost, the government hopes to enable small-scale farmers to adopt the technology widely, supporting a transition toward precision breeding and sustainable dairy expansion. The announcement comes as part of a broader government agenda to modernize agriculture, reduce input costs, and transform livestock farming into a more profitable and resilient sector
