OL KALOU, Kenya — President William Ruto has appointed gospel musician and businessman Paul Waiganjo as an advisor on Development Affairs, adding him to a growing team of presidential advisors tasked with supporting the government’s development agenda.
The appointment was announced on Sunday by Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano during a thanksgiving ceremony attended by Waiganjo in Ol Kalou, Nyandarua County.
“He will be advising the government on development issues,” Miano told congregants during the event.
The CS was accompanied by several leaders, including Mwangi Kiunjuri, as Kenya Kwanza allies campaigned for the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate ahead of the forthcoming Ol Kalou by-election.
From Gospel Music to Public Service
Waiganjo is widely known in Central Kenya for his gospel music career, having built a strong following through Kikuyu-language gospel songs over the years.
Beyond music, he has also established himself as a businessman, particularly in the real estate sector, where he has been involved in land sales and property ventures.
His appointment marks a significant transition from the entertainment industry into national governance and public policy advisory roles.
Recent Political Involvement
The musician has in recent years become increasingly active in politics.
Earlier this year, he participated in the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) nominations for the Ol Kalou parliamentary race but lost to Sammy Irungu.
Despite the setback, Waiganjo has remained visible in political circles, particularly within the Mount Kenya region, where he enjoys considerable influence among sections of the electorate through his music, business engagements, and community outreach activities.
Expanding Circle of Presidential Advisors
Waiganjo joins a team of presidential advisors that includes economist David Ndii and other specialists drawn from various sectors.
President Ruto has increasingly relied on advisors to provide expertise on economic transformation, governance, development planning, investment promotion, and implementation of government programmes under the Kenya Kwanza administration.
While details of Waiganjo’s specific responsibilities have not yet been disclosed, his appointment suggests the administration’s continued effort to incorporate individuals with grassroots influence and private-sector experience into government advisory structures.
